A place of peace in the heart of the wilds
Deep in Zambia, on the banks of the Kafue River, there is a game park of over a million acres. The second largest park in the world. A place where hippos rule the waters, lions the land and the fish eagles the sky. This is the Kafue National Park. Some thirty years ago, the Kafue River, a tributary of the mighty Zambezi, flooded its banks. In the long grass pan that formed, herds of graceful puku came to graze. It was here that Rob Buske, a local farmer, conservationist and honorary ranger chose a beautiful but remote site to build Puku Pan Safari Lodge. Nowadays the lodge is runned truly Zambian style by Matthews.
The unique lodge offers excellent opportunities for:
- Game viewing (hippo, lion, elephant, antelope species, warthog, zebra, etcetera)
- Birding (well over four hundred species have been identified in the area)
- Fishing (pike, bream, silver barbell and catfish are plentiful)
An adventure without limits
On foot, in a vehicle, or by boat, Puku Pan Safari Lodge offers an incredible game viewing experience. No gates, no fences, no other tourists. Just your small group and an experienced guide wandering free in nature's kingdom. Here you may see big game like elephant, lion and leopard, and of course, the plentiful antelopes that roam the entire area, like puku and impala.
On the river, the peering eyes of the half-submerged hippos will curiously follow your boat's course. While on the banks, prehistoric creatures like large crocodiles and monitor lizards warming their cold blooded bodies in the hot African sun.
Casting long shadows on the water are the beautiful waterberry, palm and sausage trees. Their branches provide the perfect resting place for the four hundred species of birds in the area.
For those who share the interests of the fish eagle, the river offers excellent fishing waters full of pike, bream, silver barbell and catfish.
Ornithologists can have the time of their lives, since a wide variety of Zambezian endemic and near endemic species occur in the Kafue National Park. All guides have excellent knowledge of the flora and fauna and the rich birdlife will largely increase your number of "spotted birds".
Rough it in comfort
Puku Pan Safari Lodge was designed to harmonise with its incredible natural surroundings. Eight individual secluded, thatched cottages (including a family cottage) blend in with the indigenous trees that line the bank of the river. Inside, the spacious rooms are traditionally decorated with colourful ethnic fabrics. Every cottage has an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water. From the veranda you can gaze out over a magnificent view of the tranquil river. The day's silence is broken only by the sweet song of birds and the snorting of hippos wallowing nearby.
